The Importance of the Breath

Buteyko Breathing Technique

We can go for weeks without food, days without water but only minutes without oxygen. Yet there seems to be a lot of time and energy spent on our diet and nutrition without realising that unless we are breathing correctly then it won’t matter how nutritious the food is it still won’t get processed optimally. 

Breathing is simple and we do it consciously as well as unconsciously, which is perhaps why we don’t always pay attention to it. Thankfully there is more of a realisation now about the importance of breathing correctly with research to back it up. 

My own experience of improving my breathing came from the Buyteyko technique. After years of using inhalers for asthma I eventually reduced them by 90% in two weeks and came off them completely within months by breath work alone. Countless other therapies and lifestyle changes helped to an extent before this but the main sole thing that not only helped me come off inhalers but actually made me feel  more calm and grounded was the breath. It cannot be underestimated for its part in our overall health and wellbeing.
